Living life with purpose doesn’t mean you have to win a Nobel Peace Prize or become the world’s best athlete. It takes on many different forms for everyone. Purposeful living is simply about living for something bigger than yourself. It’s about using your gifts to benefit the world around you and being intentional with how you spend your time. In difficult times, it can be easy to lose sight of your purpose, but these times can also clarify your unique abilities and what the world needs from you most.
While we’re all sheltering at home due to COVID-19, here are some tips for making the time more meaningful.
Keep a routine. Creating a productive routine is crucial. It’s important to adapt to this new normal as much as possible and not obsess over when it will be over. Wake up at a decent time, know your plan for the day and change out of the clothes you slept in. Think about the things that both motivate and relax you, and build those into your routine.
Learn something new. Now is a great time to pick up something you’ve been wanting to learn. Several companies like Nike and Peloton are offering free workout classes. Amazon Kindle is offering a free two month subscription to their online books.
Stay connected. One of the most important aspects of living a purpose-filled life is staying connected to the causes and people you love. Services like Zoom, Google Hangouts, and Marco Polo offer free video calls. Set up a weekly call to check in with friends, family, or to get an update on a cause you support.
Do something for others. Doing things for others like calling an elderly family member, writing a card, or having groceries delivered for a neighbor is one of the greatest ways to find your life’s purpose. As a family, find something kind to do for others. Having food to delivered to an essential worker is a great way to give back. Uber Eats is waiving all delivery fees for food ordered from small businesses.
Today, our circumstances might not be ideal. But let’s do the best we can with what we have to lead a purpose-filled life.
